Celebrating 150 Years of Coloma

On 11 July 2019, the Coloma community came together in glorious sunshine to celebrate a remarkable milestone: 150 years of faith, learning and opportunity. A special outdoor Mass, celebrated on the school field by the Most Reverend Archbishop Peter Smith, brought together pupils, staff, governors, clergy, former pupils and invited guests to give thanks for the generations who have shaped our school.

It was a fitting celebration, held at the heart of the school and surrounded by the community that makes Coloma so special. It provided an opportunity to reflect on our beginnings, celebrate all that had been achieved and recognise the enduring values that continue to guide us.

In his homily, Archbishop Peter Smith spoke about the purpose of education as enabling 'human flourishing' – a vision that resonates deeply with Coloma's mission. Education at Coloma has always been about more than academic success; it is about nurturing the whole person, developing faith and character, and giving every young woman the confidence and opportunity to fulfil her potential.

We were particularly honoured to receive the Apostolic Blessing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who joined us in thanksgiving for the pupils, parents, staff, Headteacher and Governors who make up our school community.

Following the Mass, guests were invited to visit our newly created prayer garden, a peaceful and reflective space offering a place for prayer, contemplation and quiet moments away from the busyness of school life. An exhibition of photographs and memorabilia in the Performing Arts Centre also brought our history to life, celebrating the people, memories and milestones that have contributed to Coloma's story over 150 years.

The anniversary was not simply a celebration of the past; it was a celebration of a living legacy. While the world and the opportunities available to young women have changed enormously since 1869, the foundations on which Coloma was built remain strong.

With Christ at the centre of all we do, we continue to live out our motto, Laborare est Orare – To work is to pray.

As we look towards the future, we do so with gratitude for those who came before us, pride in the community we are today and confidence in the generations of young women who will shape the Coloma story for years to come.
